ISO 22301 is the international requirements standard for a business continuity management system (BCMS). It helps organizations prepare for disruptive incidents, protect priority activities, maintain products and services at an acceptable predefined capacity, and recover within planned times. Disruptions may arise from IT outages, supplier failures, severe weather, facility loss, workforce shortages, cyber incidents, or other events.
A BCMS connects leadership, business continuity policy, organizational context, business impact analysis (BIA), risk assessment, continuity strategies, documented plans and procedures, exercises, internal audits, and continual improvement. It is broader than a single emergency checklist or IT recovery plan: it addresses the people, premises, suppliers, technology, communications, and decisions needed to continue priority operations.
ISO 22301 certification means that an independent certification body has audited the BCMS against the applicable requirements and made a positive certification decision. The certificate applies to a defined scope, which may cover only specified services, business units, or sites. Certification does not guarantee uninterrupted operations, eliminate disruption risk, or replace applicable legal and contractual duties.
As of October 2026, the current published requirements edition is
ISO 22301:2019 with Amendment 1:2024 addressing climate-related context. ISO is developing a revision, but no replacement edition or general transition deadline should be assumed until formally published.
